I hope your car is still under warranty. The same (or at least very similar) thing happened to my '97 855 and it turned out to be the ABS control module which was to blame. My car was still under warranty, so rplacement was covered. If it wasn't... look for an approx. $600 (USD) charge. (not pretty)
Also, I had to have the car diagnosed while it was running (the codes would clear when it was turned off). The only way I could do that was to drive it to the dealer when the light came on (which only happened once and a while)-- the service dude knew I was having problems and he suggested that course of action. He's smart! This is a little cheesy, but I'll give a little plug for the guy since they are the best service experience I've had -- Fathers & Sons Volvo in Springfield, MA. Obviously, for England residents that doesn't help, but maybe someone Stateside...
Anyway, good luck with your problem. It seems that there are a lot of ABS fault incidents reported here on the BB.
