V70 transmissions out there? Anywhere?

Not knowing where in the USA you live, I cannot point you to a salvage yard. There are quite a few that will sell you a used tranny for less than $500 and back it for a year.
It is still expensive to replace, you will need a good mechanic.

You will need to determine the tranny type.

Erie Volvo in NY state has a good rep.
