ABS warning light on V70-XC70

I will clean the sensor first. After going thru Google may just have to do that.
ABS warning light came on inexplicably when driving on freeway and rain started. When rain started light came on. It went off again but came back on a few weeks later and stayed ...
Anyway, in NZ we need the light off to get a warrant of fitness for the car. Are there any ideas that I could look at without going to the dealer who has the diag. kit?
NZ part stores don't have a generic tester and the mechanic at the garage has only an engine systems tester so I would have to go to the dealer to pull the code...
I wonder if this is an anomaly common to the V70 AWD.
