What is this part? V70-XC70 2000

2000 Volvo V70 SE (normally aspirated)

I've been wondering for six months what this part does. It is a large box to the left of the engine compartment. It appears to bring air from behind the radiator, pull it into a box, then put it through the firewall. It appears to small to be the air filter for the HVAC system. Anyone?
