That all makes sense. Cold engine with the ECT disconnected, no additional gas injected so no start. Unplug the ECT and the fan defaults to high speed to 'save' the engine.

Sounds like the ECT plug was corroded? Get some electrical cleaner and/or di-electric grease. Check the wiring as far as you can see it.
