The light has nothing to do with the battery and everything to do with the charging system. Check the belt driving the alternator and see if it needs changing, a slipping belt lowers the alternator output.
Go to a reputable parts store and ask them if they can check the alternator output while the engine is running. It should be around 14.5V. When the alternator is putting out less than 13V, the battery light will probably come on.
