You should get a set of cables for radials, not chains. Stopping with them should not be a problem; in fact, on icy roads stopping will be more controllable. Driving with cables on is OK if speeds are kept below 35 mph; any faster and it could be dangerous if the cables come off. Most cables have warnings with them to limit speeds to no more than 30 to 35 mph.

Driving with cables on helps a lot on ice and snow pack when the road is steep. I drove our '00 S80 T6 over two snow packed mountain passes last October with the Michelin Pilot MXM4 all-season tires on it. Results were very, very good. I don't forsee any need for cables driving in northern Colorado.

Unless you really need cables, I'd advise against them.
