Engine Light 850 1994

My "Check Engine" light came on today, and I'm scheduled to take the car on a 1500 mile trip tomorrow morning. I just returned from a 1800 mile trip and had no problem with the car. Just prior to the 1800 mile trip I had the engine oil and the transmission fluid changed and all the other fluids topped off. What caused the "Check Engine" light to come on and how much of a risk am I taking if I take the car on the trip before having it checked out?
