Well, Ford owns Volvo for a start. Ford is a publically listed US company that is focussed on serving its shareholders. Maybe you should work for Ford/GM divisions and see how things work. Ford has been and will be focussed on pulling costs out of components; this includes cost vs benefit for reliability issues. On the outside the car appears the same.
As for comments that there is no sign of Ford yet, Volvo has already undergone major work on new models using generic Ford platforms. Look at Jaguar for Volvo's future.
