OK, I think I have solved this mystery.

That "L" looks kinda misshapen, doncha think? It is really a lazy "V".

It's an anagram. All the letters are there to construct on the right side of the tailgate:

V70XC
AWD

I am guessing that the letters were removed for body work or a paint job. Whoever replaced them forgot the correct sequence and got a bit creative.

Now, the hard part: Telling the owner that it is all wrong and how to fix it.
