The other thing that the "adapters" do is convert the 3-wire independent amber turn signal system to the 2-wire system that most trailers have. Most trailers have the brake and stop signal in the same filament of a single bulb. The Volvo has separate turn signal and brake light.

To add to the confusion there are powered and un-powered adapters.
The powered adapters require a separate power wire. They then do not affect the "burned out bulb" indicators because they do not take any appreciable current from the light circuits.
