Black smoke is gasoline, so the engine is rich. I don't understand why he didn't use the lever in the console to downshift. If he has a turbo, he needs to understand that it will not help accellerate below 2000 rpm at 9,000 ft.
Right now his spark plugs are totally fouled. He could idle the engine at 2000 rpm to get the plugs clean, shift the gears manually, and continue on his trip.
He could also look for a bad vacuum line to the boost controller if he has a turbo, change the air filter, and a few other things. Just remember, the altitude will starve the engine for oxygen and he will not have the BHP he had below 3000 feet. Use of a good grade of gasoline will also help.
