Re: Questions for 1998-99 S70 drivers

> 1) What kind of mileage are you getting?

Mine is a N/A 5-speed manual. I average about 20 mpg. I feed it the cheap stuff and my commute is 50-50 timewise highway-city (mile-wise it is 85% highway 15% city). I usually drive it hard and accelerate out of on-ramps such that my speed matches (or faster) than the people on the highway. I have managed to get better milage by being "good", but can't stick with it. Pure highway (road trips) is around 30 mpg (car is usually loded with family and our stuff).

No sunroof - no cry.

> 3) What SCCA class does the S70 fit into? How well does it compete?

No idea.

> 4) How does the S70 handle in snow/ice conditions? Anecdotes, please.

I found it didn't handle up to my expectations on stock Michelins. Now I have winter tires and things are significantly better. Right now I am driving a loaner ('01 V70 2.4T) with Michelin MXV 4 Plus (my Michelins are plain MXV-4) and notice that the snow handling is MUCH better than my car's with stock tires. The new V70 is very different though and probably has better handling, tires notwithstanding.

> 5) Busted a headlight cover yet? Pinhole break or more severe?

No busted headlights yet (knock on wood).

> 6) Blinker light defective? The dealer seemed to know about this

> problem and fixed mine at no charge.

They all do that. It is a known issue. I think it is very minor problem and have a way of semi-permanently fixing the problem on the spot by rotating the bulb 180 degrees in the socket. Works if you do it as soon as you notice the symptom. I guess there is a recall coming regarding this.

> 7) Any S70 stories to share, I'd like to hear from you.

I have a story about "check Engine" light that I have told before. Basically, the thing keeps coming on every couple of months with the same code (611) no matter what my dealer does (and he already did a lot). As i said above, I am now driving a loaner because my car is in the shop for the same CE light problem. I have had charcoal canister replaced twice (and they tell me this time it is busted AGAIN), I have had every valve in the system replaced numerous times. Nothing doing. Not sure what is going to happen. I really like this car. It works for my needs very well. I hope the Volvo resolves this (yes, VCNA rep is personally involved). The latest I heard is they had located an old-style gas tank to replace mine with in Canada (they tried the new-style that is officially the replacement part for now, but the system rejected the new tank by not holding pressure). So, I've been riding around in a wagon for the past 3 weeks. I like the wagon a lot. If only the styling wasn't so genericly rounded.
