Sounds like BS to me, too. I replaced my side mirror glass with the Euro "split view" glass when the car was new.
The mirror glass pulls out. It's difficult to explain this unless you've done it, and it's better explained in the Haines manual.
Anyway, there are a bunch of plastic cams and levers inside the mirror. If you're not careful, you can pop one of the plastic cams out of it's plastic socket. I reassembled my mirror and discovered that the mirror wouldn't function right-left or up-down, I forget which. "Oh, $#@!", I thought. "I've broken the @#$%&*! mirror!" No. Just like the cam popped out, it can be snapped back in. The mirror has been fine ever since.
I'd hazard a guess that if you're lucky you MIGHT have drawn a mechanic who is as much of a klutz as I am, and I don't work with my hands for a living....
BTW, I always use an independent Volvo shop for non-warranty work.
