Replacing turn signal arm assembly 850

I just got finished replacing my turn signal arm assembly on my 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo. I looked for some instructions here and could not find any, so I decided to give you the benefit of my experience for those who are going to tackle the job.

I got my replacement assembly from a local auto wrecking company for $40. The first thing you will need is a set of Torx wrenches. I have a set that has a nice magnitized screwdriver handle and a set of the popular sizes of the Torx driver tips.

The first thing you will need to do is to remove the top part of the cover that houses the turn signal arm assembly. This is a two piece assembly. There are two screws that have to be accessed from the botton of the cover assembly. These two screws are about 4 inches up in a "D" shaped access hole at the bottom front of the cover assembly. If you get down and shine a flashlight up into the hole you will see the screws up in there. Once you remove these two screws, you can work the cover up and out of the hole in the dash.

Now, the other two screws on the bottom of the lower half of the cover assembly can be removed. To remove it you will need to pull it out and down to get it to clear the ignition key assembly. Then pull it down and back it out of the dash assembly.

Now you have complete access to the turn signal arm assembly. There are two white connector plugs that have to be unplugged before you go on. Both of them have clips that need to be pried back to get the plugs out.

Now the last step is to remove the two Torx screws that mount the black turn signal arm assembly to the steering column.

All you need to do is to reverse the process to install the replacement assembly.

It took me less than an hour to do the whole thing and that included dropping some screws and fumbling around get the covers on and off.

I checked with a local repair shop and they wanted over $200 parts and labor to do the job. Email me if you have any questions and I will be glad to respond to them.
