The early 5 speed auto did have a lot of problems. The dealers were told by the home office to supply tranny software updates for free, and these updates must be done.
You didn't state what the 1st gear problem was. If it is a shift to neutral problem, the software eliminates this. If it is a hard shift, there is a 'fix' for it supplied by IPD.
Has the ATF (3309) been flushed?
Considering all of the other problems with the first year of the P2 model, I would skip it and look for 2003+ cars.
