Throttle body? V70-XC70 2004

I removed the throttle body and found it quite black inside, so I gave it a good cleaning. CEL went off and no stalling since! Thanks Klaus.
Where's the black gunk from (exhaust gas recirc, crankcase fumes)?
The '97 and '98 models I had required the crankcase ventilation plumbing to be changed after getting clogged. Is this an issue with 2004?
