Just a note from a tech on what volvo pays in warranty for the dreaded gas cap code. You get .3 hours to conect the test equipment, read the code, and clear diagnostic code and perform an electronic leak test. If it fails the test, they pay an additional .2 hours to inspect all components involved to try to locate the problem. Thats 12 minutes. Can't make a living like that. Some cars defy diagnosis. Had a convertible a couple weeks ago that failed the test. Took literally 5 hours and half the car disassembled to find it, and all I had available was Mazda test equipment. Volvos diagnostic scheme involves pressurizing the fuel system with compressed air and brushing soapy water in all components looking for bubbles. If it's a small leak, they are a real bitch to find. Then you have to go beg the service manager to pay you for your time. No, we don't get paid by the hour.
