The front O2 sensor is before the CAT.
Disconnecting the battery will delete all of the history from the ECM and you will need to go through a driving/re-learning process before all of the other systems reach 'ready' status. It might be easier to just replace the sensor and drive around for a bit and see if the 'fault' goes away on its own.
In either case, do not expect to 'pass' the inspection a few days after replacing an O2 sensor.
