I suggest, after removal of the rusty clamp, clean the connector and coat it with vinyl protectant or rubber refresh stuff. You need to examine it anyway, the coating of protectant will help keep the connector from drying out and help you clean it.

I do that to my axle boots when I replace brake pads.
