I am relatively new to Volvo’s myself, but I think that I've got this motor thing sorta figured out. As I understand it, a red motor was pretty much limited to the older models (240 etc.) The white motors are the ones like the 5 Cylinder used in the 850s and forward. I think I heard that the cutoff date for the red motors was 1992 in the US and as late as 1998 in Europe. Now, I am going off of pure memory here, but I think that it is close. As far as why they named the motors what they did, maybe it is cause the white motors are aluminum and the reds are cast iron. (I think...)
I know that I will be corrected if I am wrong, but I will at least know the difference when all is said and done.
Hope I didn't confuse/ insult anyone here.
