rolling backward in 2nd gear?

Years ago I did the same thing with my BMW 2002 except I don't think the e-brake was on. Parked at the top of of a friend's driveway, put the car in second and when I came back the car was parked with rear bumper against a tree at the bottom of the driveway! Evidently it had slowly rolled downhill about 30 feet. Lucky for me no damage. Since then it has always been reverse or first AND the emergency brake on!
