You could check the color of the fluid, it is supposed to be red but it will probably be brown at this point. The amount of wear depends on the owners driving habits; a lot of throttle up take offs will cause considerable wear and tear.

Wipe the dipstick with a paper towel, it it looks blackish, keep looking for a better example.
