shifter locked intermittently S60

A friend at work approached me with a dilemna on his 2007 S60. The shifter won't come out of park, intermittently. I explained what it may be for 240's and 850's (which is what I operate and maintain). I suspected the brake switch, the ignition switch or the actual lock mechanism at the shifter. I looked through the forum and didn't find any similar problems...any ideas?
