Jeff:

I'm not that technical, but read from other site about Toyotor Highlander.

People test drive the V6 hear the tapping of engine at stop, also a few new owners also report that noise (but most new owners do nrot). And they all say somehow it goes away and come back. I owner report he tried different kind of gas from different station, until he hit one kind of gas then it never comes back, I think he said Amico(? i'm CAnadina), and higher octane like 93. I always use 87 octane from day one, luckly no tapping engine.

Give this a try before you pay any money to the mechanic, you have to put in gas anyway.
