It seems that the biggest problem with the 2001's is the automatic tranny. Buying a manual in that year is probably a good idea! Another common problem is the ETM. You can check it for a yellow or white sticker to see it has been replaced. It's early and I can't remember which one indicates a newer ETM. I'm sure someone else will chirp in...
My Dad had a 2001 for about a year and half before he was rear-ended. I don't recall any real problems with the car. The ETM had been replaced but I felt like it needed replacing again since it had a slight hesitation. It is my belief that not all 2001's are bad cars. But do remember that you are taking a risk buying that model year. 2001 was the first year for that model and they can be prone to problems.
