First and foremost, flush the fluid. If you have it flushed, make sure the garage does not use a flushing machine.

When there is a tranny fault, the flashing arrow is turned on and the TCM goes into 'limp home mode', which means it will stay in 3rd gear all of the time.

You might have a dirty, worn, PNP switch. Rowing the shifter usually clears it for a month or two.
