Your predicament is tough to diagnose based on the little info given. Assuming the starter motor is cranking the engine around, I dont think it is the timing belt otherwise you'd be hearing some significant "interference" between valves and pistons (not good!)
If the engine is being turned over and not firing, it could be a ton of things. Check for spark, check for fuel, etc...all the usual diagnostics.
If on the other hand the engine is not turning over, and you hear a whizzing, whining sound, it could be the starter motor turning, but not engaging the flywheel due to a bad solenoid. Old trick here is the whack the solenid a few times with a hammer of crowbar, and try starting it again.
By the way. with 89k miles, I'd be darned sure you have a good timing belt on it. If you cannot confirm this, get it changed! Now!
