There is only one lower mount that breaks, passenger side next to the crank gear. You need a jack stand, a floor jack (the only kind, never use your spare tire jack), and a 2X4 to jack the engine up about 1 inch.
The top mount can be visually inspected and is prone to break. You should be able to replace it. You do need a jack under the engine to jack it up a little, or you are strong enough to push the engine back and forth. No the entire upper mount doesn't come off, just the rubber part.
