Actually, no. I am a friend of the mechanic. His shop has some of the fastest cars in Canada. I met that guy with the Mazda's one night at a race. He was driving a stock 2000 Mazda Millenia S. Some of the Talon/Eclipses that come out of his shop are ridiculously fast. Many are in the 9's and 10's.
Actually, your reading of the penalties for racing are inaccurate. I had a friend who was caught racing. He was written a ticket for racing, illegal lane change and 120km/h in a 60km/h. The cop gave him a hard time, but left him with the three tickets and a mandatory appointment with a justice of the peace. He fought the ticket in court and won. But, his licence was not automatically suspended for 24 hours and his vehicle was not impounded.
Don't get me wrong. Some times, we get to what appears to be a sweet stretch, and as everyone's getting lined up and races are being shaken down, cops roll in. There have been times when 10 cars appear out of no where and start "chasing" us out. Heck, I've been spotlighted by helicopters a couple times. I say chasing because to be totally honest, a number of these cars can easily outrun the special chase cars i.e. Camaro Z28 SS police issue a.k.a. the Interceptor.
So some nights, we spend hours just trying to get to a strip without being hassled. While other nights, there's 3-5 hours of incredible racing. Everything from Honda/Acura's, to BMW's, to Mercedes Benz's, to Mitsu's, to Mazda's, to Volvo's, to Hyudai's, to Cadillac's, to Ford's, to Chevy's, to Toyota's, to Audi's, to VW's, to Subaru's, etc. On some good nights, you will see all of these makes and more racing for hours on end. There are burn outs, victory donuts, motorbike racing, and some fine female action as well.
But the majority of the time, it's great racing for a couple hours, getting chased out, meeting up at another on the fly meeting place, and then another strip for a couple hours.
It isn't rare for the sun to start coming up on my way home for the night. Ah, those sweet summer nights and mornings, the smell of burn outs, the sound of highly tuned engines, I can't wait.
In all honesty, I am interested in how modified Volvo's are doing. Would you be interested in doing a little bracket racing at St. Thomas this summer? I want to see what your Volvo is capable of.
