...to cause your battery to go bad.
If your S80's battery is like ours, it needs checked at least every other month to ensure the water level is correct. Our S80 had set on the lot for about 5 months before we got it. I checked the battery water level the day after we drove it home and it was about 1/4th inch below the indicators in all six cells. I filled each cell to the indicator. About 3 months later, the battery water level was down below the indicators a bit. Filled the battery again. It needed a bit of water in another 3 months. And I will continue to check at least every other month to keep the battery water level up so a proper charge is kept intact.
I would not be surprized to hear of a car battery that evaporates its water enough to not hold a charge enough to start it at some point. I would sure check your battery water level and put in some distilled water if it's low. I'd also bet your battery water went way down and that's what caused the problem. In some instances, low battery water for a long period of time can render the battery dead and a new battery is in order.
If you can get a new one under warranty, then that's great. Otherwise, well, look how much smarter you are now...... And read your owner's manual about checking battery water levels.
After all this is said and done, I'm almost convinced that batteries these days need checked much more often than they used to. Our '99 BMW's battery needs a bit more water than batteries of days gone by. But I check these things - just like the oil level in the crankcase.
Best wishes and drive safe...
