intermittent fan a/c on 960 1996

More than likely, the pressure sensor failed. I overcharged my system once and on a hot day, the system purged with a BANG, as it should have. Yours sounds like the pressure was not that high when purging.

This is a safety valve that releases pressure at around 500psi (supposedly). So long as your amount of R134a is within spec, it should never release.

You might be able to find one at a Pick&Pull as they seldom fail.
BTW, below 40F at the vents sound too cold. It should be in the high 40Fs.
