Suggestion: The next time you get a CEL, go to an autoparts store and get the code(s) read. You might have just had a 'loose' gas cap error.

Getting better mpg is a given, the O2 sensors shut down any meaningful fuel/air mixture and it is a wonder you seren't getting 16mpg or less.
