That's awesome, thank you. I might try to use the shop I'm working in to do this now - they have impact tools that would probably work to remove that thing. I broke 3 1/2" drive tools trying to remove one of the wheel nuts from a honda, which is why I was concerned.

If it does totally die, would the AWD keep the car moving forward? My friend wants to go visit a friend who lives about 1000 miles away (round trip), and I don't want her to get stranded nor to destroy her transfer case if that might happen if it goes out.
