hard to detect rear rattle

If it stops when you lightly apply the brakes, it is probably a loose brake pad. Use a rubber hammer or wooden block and pound on the brake components, not too hard and with the wheel raised.

I found one of my wife's doing that. One of the 3 clips that hold the pad in place was loose - I bent it out for more grip and all was well.

Oh, remove the tape from the brake lines...
