Riverbend has a good point, some of the later year 1998's have the new style tensioner. Your best bet is to remove the belt cover and take a look. The old style is a black shock, the new style is rectangular. The new style tensioner needs to be replaced with the belt.
Is there absolutely no documentation with this car? Some times there is a receipt in the glove box showing the town. Then look for a near by Volvo dealer and call and ask if the car was serviced there. They can look up the records.
