Re: Help me find an engine noise please! 850 1997R

The method to diagnose the 850 pulley/belt noise is as follows:

1. See if your car has the new longer style accessory belt. This belt solved the slipping over the alternator problem.

2. Before you cold start the car, remove or loosen the accessory belt. If the car still makes the noise, the problem is under the timing belt cover. If the noise stops, check the accessory belt tensioner, pulley, and related components like alternator, compressor, power steering pump. Use a mechanic's stethascope or short length of hose held to ear to narrow down the source of the noise.

3. If coming from under the timing belt cover, check the tensioner pulley, the idler pulley, and the water pump bearing for noise with the stethascope.

P.S. helps to have someone open the throttle to ~1500 rpms while you are sniffing around as the noise appears louder at this engine speed than idle
