Most motor heads would have installed the larger turbo and upgraded computers, just for the higher boost potential. What you did should not have produced a rich mixture or smoke.

The timing of the 2.3 is the same, so you are looking for air leaks around the intake. I hope you also did the oil separator and timing belt while the engine was out.
