If this is on the door and not the A pillar, you will need two identical backing plates to beef it up - one on each side of the door frame. If it is really bad, a weld might be needed. Make the support plate as wide and long as possible.

With the door stay removed while you repair it, grease the two small rollers that seem to be attached to the spring.
