2001 S40 very low gas mileage S40-V40 2001

Also, twice my car has died while driving. Once while accelerating and then quickly hitting the breaks. Once while reversing up a steep hill. The engine died and all the lights came on and the radio stayed on. So it wasn't loss of power, just engine failure?
