Trouble with ambient temperature sensor? V70-XC70 1999

There are 2 temperature sensors on the front of the car, one on each side. The driver's side is supposed to fit in the small grill in the bumper. The passenger side is supposed to stick through a hole in the splash pan. I took the passenger side and glued it to the grill on that side of the car.

One of the above sensors is supposed to tell the ECU what the intake air temp is.

The 850 had a temp sensor in the cabin air intake, which makes more sense.
