ABS/TRACS Light Tip 850 94

Some of you may have heard this one before.

Got the good old ABS and TRACS warning lights. Pulled code 141. Hmmm I says. Lets take a look at the old brake pedal position sensor. Reached in, removed the clip ring and snatched the sensor out of the brake booster. Big hissing sound as the vacuum in the boster was released when I yanked the switch out. When I went to put the switch back in I couldn't figure out how it was sealed to the booster to prevent a huge vacuum leak. No seal to be found anywhere. I even put the sensor back in the hole and fired the engine up tp see if it would "self seal" itself. NOPE. After a while it dawned on me. That sound I heard was the vacuum sucking the O ring seal into the bottom of the brake boster. After many anxious minutes I finally fished the O Ring out otf the bottom of the booster. Had to remove the vacuum hose check valve so I could go fishing with some .040 safety wire and put a small lite down inside the boooster through the sensor opening SO I could see what I was doing.

The moral to the story is BLEED OFF THE VACUUM BEFORE YOU PULL THE SENSOR OUT!

BTW the sensor had cracked the solder connections between the connectors and the circuit board inside the switch. Re-soldered then and all is right with the world once again.
