I have a 2000 V40, and find it a very reliable car. In fact that series was found to be the most reliable volvo in Brit survey. I think one factor was its manufacture and design with Mitsubishi.
It is better in every performance than a 240/740 , faster, more economical (32mpg on hwy at 70mph) handles better and is quieter. Main downside is it has less cargo room, and is a bit harder to work on, but so far mine with 140000 miles has been very good.
Note one rust area behind the front wheels.
