Major gasket fail - lower left engine - Help?

That looks like a water pump gasket to me - but I am a novice. I don't know how that would be related to the oil leak, or circumstances that would cause it to "blow out". I don't believe there is a removable timing cover that is bolted on - just the plastic one that covers the belts and pulleys.
