This evening I decided to spend all but 10 minutes and replace my drop in K&N with a 6" cone (thanks to John Pullen for his advice)
I picked up a K&N cone (6" length, 3" intake opening), P/N RE-0930 ($46.00) from a local speed shop here.
Tools needed:
-> star screwdriver (you can use the one in your 'toolkit' located in your trunk)
-> flat head screwdriver
Directions:
Unclip the clips that hold the top of the airbox in place.
Unclip a few harnesses that are clipped on to the top of the airbox.
Remove the two star screws that holds the intake hose to the airbox.
Lift up the top of the airbox, and wiggle the intake hose off.
Removed flat filter, removed rubber o-ring from intake hose.
Place cone filter on intake hose, use a flathead screwdriver to secure the clamp.
As per John's advice, I also left the bottom of the airbox in place as to get colder air from the air dam (connected to the front of the car).
Thats it!!!
The engine is noisier, and I now get the infamous vacuum cleaner sucking sound, but what did sort of surprise me was after warm up and radio off, upon initial let off of the pedal after an acceleration, I hear a short 1 second, almost sounds like a boost bleed off sound. I didn't throw any codes so I'm not too worried about it.
It feels a little more responsive, especially in the upper end. I'll give it a good run on my way to work tomorrow.
Long term plans may be to refit (after some creative cutting) the original top of the airbox back over the cone setup, to create sort of a cold air system. Before I do this, I'll go to my dealer and pick up a new airbox, just in case I mess this one up, or wish to put it back to original.
