Electric window problems 850 1996

O.K. I struggled today in the mid-day summer heat for more than an hour to get the the window switch cluster out of the center console. I don't know what you guys were talking about when you posted "just use some electrical switch cleaner on it" The unit is almost fully contained although I did get the bottom off the cluster you have to pull the switches from their plastic moulding before you'd ever be able to use any switch cleaner on them. Note: to remove the bottom moulding push in and remove the rear tabs first.

When you try to remove the cluster from the center console you should pull the plastic moulding piece under the emergency brake handle first. Pry from the back forward until your able to pop it out. After you've removed this piece you'll be able to reach your fingers around and under the console to help push from undernieth upwards on the switch cluster as you pry from above with a wide flat blade. I used a fairly substantial pocket knife to do this on my car and was successful in not damaging any of the surrounding plastic surfaces.

Once you've gotten the bottom molding off the cluster you'll see that most of the entire cluster of switches are soddered together by metal bridge pieces. It appears to me that Volvo designers really only intended the entire clust to just be replaced if you only have a problem with a single switch.

So what's the deal? I want to fix my intermitant driver's window switch up mode problem but I've not gotten the full story as of yet. Do I really just have to break down and buy a new switch cluster to fix the problem?

Thanks

Dave
