Cam gear runout (wobble) causing annoying sound

Had subtle (but annoying) engine sound ever since I bought vehicle, somehow missed it when test-driven, but as I said somewhat subtle; Buddy has same vehicle, no such sound on his (he DID notice difference; when we drove both, one after the other). Sound is wah-wah-wah-wah .. (best I can describe) which increases in frequency with engine speed. Not normal. Annoying.
Finally traced (I hope) to runout in cam gears, visually quite noticeable while engine running. Causes tensioner "ear" to oscillate 1/16 inch or more total, I'm thinking that's excessive? Noise definitely same frequency as cam shaft rotation and tensioner oscillation.
Anyone experienced this, and played with eliminating runout of cam pulley teeth? (Of course, if pulley adjustment in slots (I have VVT's) happened to be needed for timing, runout efforts would be for nought; but I'm thinking such timing adjustment is not normally necessary?)
You may be thinking, "wow, this guy's got way too much time on his hands"; but honestly, this noise is eating my lunch.
THANKS IN ADVANCE.
(Please don't suggest I turn volume up ..)
