Re: I'd like some help,please. 850 1994

Hi Rich,

I will try to answer your questions.

The ECM (EngineControlModule) is placed behind the right headlight in

the engine room in a black plastic box, there's also the TCM

(TransmissionControlModule).

The tool you need to work with your car is the Volvo VST.

There's also a general tool called Scan Tool that all none Volvo

dealers can use.

BUT if you really want a tool you should try to get a VST

(VolvoSystemTester).

This tool is very expensive and I don't really think that you need

this instrument for daily use!

Talk to your Volvo dealer and see if they can sell you one for a nice

price.

In Sweden it costs 1800$!

The connection under the coin holder is called CARB or OBDII connector

and is developed for the VST tool or the general Scan Tool.

Now to the funny parts :-)

I work within engine development at Volvo Cars in Gothenburg and this

is my biggest interrest!

1. If we start with engine performance you will need to upgrade your

exhaustsystem first.

A 850 T-5 or AWD, x70 2.5T and AWD can gain +25hp and +70Nm with just

chip.

A S/V/C70 T5 can gain ~15hp and +70Nm with a chip.

If you replace the exhaustsystem with let's say a Ipd system you

can gain +50hp in combination with a chip.

A bigger turbo can give you another +15-20hp.

So start with a new exhaust.

I have a 3" with race catalytic converter and 2,5" after cat. from TME

and it sounds and looks very good.

Go for that one!

2. Next you go for the chip to your Bosch M4.3 ECM Ipd sounds good

because their ECM is certified for US market.

They reprogam the units instead of replacing the chip that's the best

part with IPD upgrade if you ask me.

I have made my chip myself and can't give your more advise here!

You have a Mitsubishi TD04HL-15G turbo with 150/40 wastegate.

Next step is Mitsubishi TD04HL-16T turbo with 218/60 or 275/60

wastegate from S/V/C70 T5 and 850R man. (M59)partn.8601238.

The biggest step is a TD04HL-18T turbo with 275/60 wastegate from

S/V70R man. (M59) and man. AWD (M58) partn.8601456.

If you have AW transmission you should go for the 16T turbo otherwise

go for the 18T turbo.

3. Replace your airfilter with a K&N filter from IPD.

4. A new exhaustpipe from the R-models could be fun partn.1270537.

Important:

When you have upgraded your car you need to drive it on good fuel!!!

Go for >95 unleaded the higher quality the better and it will save

the engine and give you more power!

Chassi:

Well, if you have the standard chassi - go for the T-5R springs for

normal/forced driving and mount the shocks from 850R.

For highest performance buy the springs for T-5R and shockabsorders

from Bilstein, Koni, Spax or for top performance adjustable shocks

from a swedish company called Öhlins (Oehlins) partn.9204201 to

9204203 depending on 4dr/5dr at your Volvodealer.

Bilstein have complete chassi-kit and I think you could find

something from IPD/TME also.

Remeber to replace both springs and shocks if you do anything with

the chassi.

Brakes:

As you probably know - this is a weak spot!

Brake performance is not acceptable compared to the engine

performance.

Get new brakes 16" or 17" and get better brakefluid +650 degrees C!

Tar-Ox, IPD, Brembo, ATE .....

Wheels:

17" Pirelli PZero or Michelin Pilot 205/45ZR17 are the only options

here if you lower the chassi.

With the std. chassi it might be possible to use 215/45ZR17, but try

before you buy - GoodYear F1, Pirelli P6000 or Michelin Pilot.

Drive safe / Janne
