I've had terrible static (low signal/noise) on AM with my antenna driven SC-815. All I can sometimes hear is a velocity proportioned buzz. Clicking the windows sometimes eliminated the interference. So Volvo came out with a static charge fix- a pin is placed on each rear axle. This pin has a spring loaded brush that rubs against a new grease cap. Since the cap and the brush are not electrically bound, the static charge from the rolling tires is supposed to be discharged into the grounding system. It worked for about a year. At the last Volvo op0en house in Rockleigh I asked Lars Anderson if he had any ideas. Here's where my rabmling is coming to your issue- Lars suggested that I measure the DC resistance at the antenna, with the antenna raised. The value for proper operation is .5 ohms (one half). That's a test I would do to eliminate the antenna/grounding. Then you could try a end to end resistance check. Hitting the radio could be a loose antenna connection.
good luck.
