Not sure of the validity of this comment, but worth considering:
A friends 2004 drivers side had a spring failure... he was warned to be very
careful driving the car because in a hard turn the spring could shift and the broken part might snag the tire, blowing it.
*** note I never checked the dimensions to see if that could happen.
